Understanding market dynamics, implementing escalation clauses, developing flexible procurement strategies, and maintaining strong supplier relationships help construction professionals maintain project viability despite unpredictable material cost movements.

Concrete Solutions for Long Life Transportation Infrastructure

Concrete has emerged as the material of choice for transportation infrastructure, from highways and bridges to complex traffic interchange systems. Strategic material selection, advanced design methodologies, and refined construction practices ensure that concrete pavements and structures deliver exceptional longevity under the demands of heavy traffic and severe environmental exposure. These concrete solutions reduce lifecycle costs through minimized maintenance requirements and extended service life, making them the most economical choice for critical transportation networks.

Caltrans and the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) has begun the next phase of State Route 4 (SR-4) Widening Project in Contra Costa County, California, which will entail a cost of $63 million.

The entire SR-4 widening project is anticipated to cost more than $554 million. The work has been staged in five phases and involves widening of the SR-4, interchanges, and local roadways from west of Loveridge Road to the State Route 160 interchange.

The CCTA, to accomplish work in this phase, received a grant of $26.7 million from Proposition 1B, a transportation bond approved by the voters in 2006. Construction on the project will be done by CC Myers Incorporated.

After widening of the SR-4, BART will add a new mass transit service to eastern Contra Costa County in the widened highway’s median. The SR-4 widening project in conjunction with Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) project represent a combined investment of more than $1 billion, which will alleviate traffic congestion problem in one of the most congested corridors in the Bay Area.
