A UK-based civil engineering firm has opened an office in Oman as it seeks to expand its operations to the GCC.

Hewlett Civil Engineering has teamed up with a local partner to bid for projects in the Sultanate, which is currently implementing a $78bn, five-year plan on infrastructure spending.

The company, which was present at Oman Infra, said it would initially be sending over a small team from the UK to work at its Bauscher Heights office, and adding to it as and when required.

Managing director Alan Cooper said it was vital for a medium-sized firm such as Hewlett to look to other frontiers given the economic downturn in the UK.

He said a business plan was in place to finance projects as and when they came online, and if Oman was successful, it could act as a springboard or hub to increase Hewlett’s footprint in the region.

Hewlett, which was established in 1987, has offices in Leeds, Warwick and Perth, Scotland, and employs more 450 people.

One of its recent project wins was for the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) in England, for drainage and highways work on the site of a future housing scheme in Doncaster.
