Dutch design practice Royal HaskoningDHV has secured a contract from the Uganda’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development for the design and construction of mini-hydro power project in Uganda.

Pursuant to the contract, Royal HaskoningDHV will design, finance and construct ten mini-hyro power projects in the west of the country. The stations will be developed in small rivers, where water power will be used to generate electricity.

The power generated by the new facilities will offset the power requirements of 40,000 people and 800 small and medium-sized enterprises. The construction work on the project is scheduled for completion in 2016.

The project is being financed by NL Agency, a part of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its Facility for Infrastructure Development (ORIO) grant program and by Uganda’s Ministry of Energy.

The project is in line with the development policy of the country to connect 61% of its population with electricity in 2017. The electricity is currently accessible to just 10% of the population.
