Galliford Try, the housebuilding, construction and regeneration group, announces that its Building business has been appointed to a new £40 million contract to build the new Centre for Teaching and Learning at Durham University
The centre, to be built at Lower Mountjoy on the university’s city centre campus, is set to provide a new hub for educational innovation at Durham. Alongside new lecture centres and teaching rooms the centre will utilise new technologies, including new classrooms that will allow students to shar course in real time with students from peer institutions around the world.
The new building will also be used by the University to host major academic conferences outside of term time. The design of new building was carefully considered to response to the context of the local area, including the nearby buildings and views of the Durham World Heritage Site.
Professor Alan Houston, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) for Durham University, said: “The Centre for Teaching and Learning is a key part of our University Strategy, 2017-2027 to ensure Durham is world-leading in research, education and the wider student experience.
“It is the first new-build development to come forward under the Strategy, and this reflects the fact that enhancing our teaching and learning – our students’ education – is a key priority for us. We are excited to begin work on site, and we look forward to the Centre welcoming its first students in 2019.”
