Crews with the Northeast Ohio Regional District lowered the 27ft (8m) diameter Herrenknecht TBM in place to excavate the 5.5km Euclid Creek Storage Tunnel earlier this week. It took several hours to position the machine down the 61m shaft to prepare it to begin boring.
Earlier this year, Tom Szaraz, project manager at McNally, told T&TNA: “We are facing many time constraints. When the TBM is ready to launch in June we’ll have approximately 15 months of mining ahead of us.”
The tunnel is the first in a series of storage tunnels being constructed as a part of Project Clean Lake, the Sewer District’s 25 year, USD 3bn programme to cut the amount of combined sewage entering local waterways annually.
