Ocon Construction has secured a £5.3 million ($8.20 million) contract from the University of Birmingham to build four new student accommodation blocks at its Edgbaston Campus in Birmingham, UK.

The scheme has been designed by Stephen George & Partners. Pursuant to the design and build contract, the company will build a 140-units student housing scheme by September 2012. The new student accommodation will be a mix of studio accommodation and en-suite study bedrooms in 4/5 bedroom clusters, each having their own kitchen and dining and living areas.

The company will build the facility using a light-weight steel frame. The structures will feature brick and curtain walling envelope. The contract further requires the company to develop a new district heating scheme and divert the services from the existing blocks to the new district heating network.

The project will enhance the University’s student accommodation provision and make the on-campus residential accommodation more energy efficient.
