Six companies from the county were invited to discuss health and safety measures by BAM Construction, one of the UK’s largest contractors and part of the worldwide Royal BAM Group.
Three – groundworks company Goldmax Ltd from Watford, concrete specialist A J Morrisroe & Sons Ltd from Borehamwood, brick and blockwork firm Pacebrow Ltd from Hemel Hempstead received gold awards for their performance, while a fourth, Rees Flooring, also from Hemel Hempstead, was highly commended.
Adam Harding, regional director of St Albans-based BAM, said: ‘Sharing knowledge and encouraging safety discussions with colleagues is the key to improvement. As leaders of businesses we are responsible for the health, safety and wellbeing of all who work on our projects. Procedures alone don’t prevent accidents. The culture we create, the behaviour we demonstrate through our actions – these are powerful influences too. Part of good leadership is to promote effective collaboration and clarity, and to ensure we continually engage with our workforce and respect their knowledge & expertise.’
Mr Harding presented the awards during a day bringing together over 80 of BAM’s key sub-contractors to examine the strength of leadership and culture and its influence on safety. Firms from Welwyn Garden City and Luton also attended.BAM employs more than 250 people directly, and around 300 – 400 suppliers and subcontractors in the area.
Watford’s Goldmax was given the overall gold award. The company has worked on several of BAM’s project such as the new Rydens Enterprise School in Walton on Thames, 3 and 4 Pancras Square at Kings Cross Central, and the University of Surrey’s new School of Veterinary Medicine.Mr Harding presented the award to the company’s managing director, Gerry Lavelle, who said: ‘I’m extremely pleased that our efforts have been recognised. Health & safety in our operations and with our workforce play a vital role in the success of our business’
