The HD785 by Komatsu is demonstrating equipment durability across extreme mining environments in Ghana and northern Sweden, where operations face temperatures ranging from 34 degrees to –20 degrees. Designed as a high-capacity rigid dump truck for large-scale mining operations, the machine continues to deliver consistent performance under prolonged shifts, difficult terrain and fluctuating environmental conditions.

Deployed thousands of kilometres apart, the HD785 operates at the Ayanfuri gold mine in Ghana and at a major copper mine in northern Sweden. Despite stark contrasts in climate, both sites rely on the machine’s endurance, operator-focused design and advanced systems to maintain productivity. The HD785-8 features a payload capacity of 92.2 tonnes, combined with manoeuvrability and automated support systems that enable stable operations across uneven terrain. Its performance in these environments highlights the growing importance of equipment durability as mining projects expand into increasingly demanding regions.

KomatsuAt the Ghana site, where temperatures regularly reach 33–34 degrees, the machine operates under dust, vibration and long working hours. Its air-conditioned cab, integrated cameras and operator assistance systems support sustained performance. Operator Ruth Ofori of Rocksure International Limited explains: “Strength, emotional intelligence, discipline and perseverance are the core values needed to succeed in this male-dominated field.

“Venturing into a predominantly male industry was a high-risk decision, but leaving my office job as a Financial Analyst proved to be extremely rewarding. I’m passionate about encouraging other women to consider this industry. No matter where you find yourself, these skills are transferable.”

Komatsu GhanaShe adds: “The operator-centric design and air-conditioned cabin of the HD785 provides me with essential comfort while driving the machine. This allows me to concentrate on my work, regardless of the external conditions.”

Komatsu EuropeIn northern Sweden, where temperatures drop to –20 degrees and daylight can be limited to three hours, operational demands shift toward visibility and control. Operator Caroline Landström, who has worked with the HD785 for over three and a half years, states: “Many think only men can operate these machines, but I’m eager to show that women can do it too. The conditions we work in are vast, but it’s something I’m used to, having lived in Northern Sweden all my life.

She also highlights the role of Komatsu KomVision, which provides a real-time 360 view to improve navigation and eliminate blind spots, supporting safety and efficiency in low-visibility conditions.
