Abengoa S.A., a Spain-based solar energy company, has won a contract from the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mining to develop and operate a new $160 million electricity transmission project in the Cuzco region of Peru.

Pursuant to the contract, Abengoa will carry out the engineering, design, construction, maintenance and start-up of the three electricity transmission lines. Altogether, the three lines will cover more than 353.9km and will connect Machupicchu to Tintaya.

The three transmission lines include a 153km long Machupicchu-Quencoro line, a 116km Quencoro-Onocora line and a 84.9km Onocora-Tintaya line. The company will also establish connections to the Quencoro and Quencoro Nueva substations, construct two new substations in Quencoro and Onocora, and extend the substations in Suriray, Quencoro and Tintaya Nueva.

Under the terms of the contract, Abengoa will ensure the highest levels of quality at every stage of the project. The works on the project is likely to span for 38 months. Upon commissioning of the new transmission line, Abengoa will manage the lines for a period of 30 years.

The new electricity transmission project will enable the Cuzco region to meet its energy demand in an efficient and sustainable way. The project will contribute to resolving the problems of overloads, instability and congestion on the lines that currently operate in the south east part of the country.

The Machupicchu-Quencoro-Onocora-Tintaya transmission line will transport electricity to the hydroelectric power plants of Machupicchu, Santa Teresa, Pucará and Quillabamba, as well as, completing the improvements to the National Interconnected Electricity System (SEIN) and other demand centres in southern Peru.
