Viridor receives approval for $240 million recycling facility in UK

Viridor Limited has received a planning consent from Glasgow City Council for the development of £154 million ($240.08 million) Glasgow Recycling and Renewable Energy Centre (GRREC) in Glasgow, Scotland, UK.

The proposed facility will be built in Polmadie and it will recycle and generate electricity using domestic green bin residual. The recycling facility will incorporate few of the most advanced technologies that are used across Europe.

The plant will operate a three-step process comprising a smart materials recycling facility to enhance recycling, anaerobic digestion to capture food and organic material and an advanced conversion facility to recover renewable energy from post-recycling material that remains.

The power generated at the facility can offset electricity requirements of 22,000 households and meet heating requirements of 8,000 homes. The facility will prevent emission of almost 90,000 tons of carbon dioxide per annum.

The construction work on the facility is scheduled to commence in mid-2013 and is scheduled to be completed in early 2016.
