US-based McCarthy Building Companies Incorporated has reached a construction milestone on the new $335 million Mercy Hospital Joplin with the topping out ceremony in Chesterfield, Missouri.

Located at the intersection of Interstate 44 and Main St. in Joplin, the new seven-storey, 875,000 square feet hospital will feature more than 260 private rooms. Upon completion, the new hospital will include medical surgical, critical care, women’s/children’s (labour, delivery, recovery and postpartum rooms), behavioural health and rehab.

The bottom three floors of the structure include hospital space, with a seven-storey patient tower and a four-storey clinic tower rising above the hospital space. There is a separate 30,000 square feet central utility plant connected to the main structure by a 450-feet underground tunnel.

The exterior of the building will be completed in November 2013, the central utility plant will be operational by January 2014 and the main structure is expected to open in March 2015. The new hospital will replace the former St. John’s Mercy Regional Medical Center, which was demolished in May 2011 by EF-5 tornado.
