Parsons, a US-based engineering and construction firm, in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Transportation and Lunda Construction Company, has announced the replacement of Maryland Avenue Bridge in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Parsons stated that the development marks the first use of self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) in the state.

The new design-build project included off-site construction of two spans, resulting in safer working conditions and shortened road closures. Each 105 feet span weighed more than 2.6 million pounds and had to be transported 1,000 feet with the SPMTs, taking approximately two hours.

The Maryland Avenue Bridge crosses over I-35E, joining the North End and Payne-Phalen neighborhoods. Parsons is the designer on the project and Lunda Construction Company served as the contractor. The bridge is scheduled to open to traffic by mid-September 2012.

Parsons delivers design/design-build, program/construction management, and other professional services packaged in alternative delivery methods to federal, regional, and local government agencies, as well as to private industrial customers across the world.
