Samsung SDS has officially commenced the construction of a new facility dedicated to advanced technological infrastructure in Gongdan-dong, Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province. Spanning 46,281 square meters, this AI data center serves as a core component of the companyโs regional investment strategy. Following official approval in August 2026, the project was formally announced in November and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.
Technical Specifications and Infrastructure
The facility is engineered to support the rigorous demands of high-performance computing, specifically targeting GPU-intensive workloads. Upon initial completion, the site will operate with a power capacity of 60 MW, with a structured roadmap in place to scale this capacity to 120 MW in subsequent phases.
To manage the significant heat output associated with modern cloud computing and processing, the site utilizes a hybrid cooling architecture. This system employs air cooling for network and storage equipment, while liquid cooling is dedicated to high-density server zones. The design also integrates large-capacity power infrastructure and redundant backup systems to ensure continuous operational stability.
Strategic Objectives and Regional Impact
The Gumi site represents the first primary initiative under a broader investment program aimed at fostering high-tech sectors within the Yeongnam region. According to Lee Jun-hee, CEO of Samsung SDS, the AI data center is designed to provide a robust foundation for processing vast data volumes and maintaining stable artificial intelligence operations.
The facility is intended to serve several key functions:
- Providing colocation services for external clients to host their own hardware.
- Supporting internal AI operations for various Samsung affiliates.
- Facilitating manufacturing automation, including the integration of precision-task robots for Robotics Transformation operations.
This development follows a formal commitment that was made in January, involving an investment of 427.3 billion won and the signing of a memorandum of understanding with local government authorities in North Gyeongsang Province as well as Gumi City.
