Vietnam recently organized a ceremony to announce the commencement of construction on a 188km expressway that will traverse the Mekong Delta in the southern part of the country. The expressway will stretch from Chau Doc City on the border with Cambodia to the port of Tran De, located on the South China Sea. This six-lane project carries a total price tag of US$1.9 billion and will receive funding from both the central and provincial governments.

Vietnam’s Prime Minister, Pham Minh Chinh, attended the ceremony, emphasizing the crucial significance of the expressway in linking the region with the national expressway system. He also underscored the government’s ambitious objective of constructing six expressways throughout the delta, promoting improved connectivity among economic hubs, international border crossings, and seaports.

To manage the project effectively, it has been divided into four sub-projects, with each sub-project being overseen by the respective People’s Committees of Soc Trang, Hau Giang, An Giang provinces, and Can Tho City. The anticipated completion of the project is set for 2026.
