Kier Construction Scotland has been appointed to take forward a £9.7m redevelopment of the six-storey high, Category B listed Wolfson Building on behalf of the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.

This forms part of an overall investment of £15.5m into the Wolfson Building to establish it as the centre of Strathclyde’s UK-leading Department of Biomedical Engineering.

The work is due to start shortly and the building is due to be completed by early 2020. The programme of work comprises of providing new facilities, including research and teaching laboratories, increased office accommodation for staff and students and new social spaces for students.

This latest win builds on the higher education portfolio of projects that Kier is currently delivering, including the completion of a £14m redevelopment of Edinburgh College of Art and a £7.7m redevelopment of Murchison House, both for the University of Edinburgh. In addition, Kier has recently completed work at the University of Aberdeen, Abertay University, Robert Gordon University and the University of the West of Scotland.

Brian McQuade, managing director for Kier Construction Scotland, said: “Kier has a leading reputation of delivering first-class facilities across the higher education sector. We are looking forward to working closely with the University’s team, supporting the local community as we create important employment and educational opportunities throughout the project, and providing excellent new facilities for the students and staff to enjoy.”

Kier Construction, part of Kier Group, is one of four principal supply chain partners on the University of Strathclyde’s £250m framework to support the delivery of its ongoing Capital Investment Plan.
