WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff has been appointed by developer Carillion to deliver engineering consultancy for the Tower Works site in Holbeck Urban Village, Leeds city centre. WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff will provide civil and structural engineering and building services design, including geotechnics, acoustics, fire protection and air quality for the planned mixed-use site.

Work is expected to start on the one hectare site in January 2016 for the development that comprises 147 residential units, 92,000 sq ft of commercial office space and 20,000 sq ft of retail, restaurant and bar spaces.

The first phase is expected to reach completion in December 2017 and includes 85,000 sq ft of residential accommodation with ground floor restaurant and bar spaces. The planned development will combine canal-side apartments with historic architecture on site, including three Grade II listed towers that give the site its name.

The Homes & Communities Agency (HCA), which owns the site, selected Carillion as its development partner in March 2015 and Jestico & Whiles as architect for this phase of the development. [See our previous report here.]

WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff technical director David Hill said: “This is a fantastic project for the company and we’re looking forward to helping realise the HCA and Carillion’s plans for this prestigious mixed-use scheme. This development phase, which includes canalside residential elements as well as office and retail space, will further cement this corner of Leeds as a very special place for people to live, as well as work and play.”
