The Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC), the owner and operator of the state’s Central Landfill and recycling services, broke ground on a $4 million sewer infrastructure project at I-295 Overpass on Central Avenue in Johnston.

The project is expected to provide sewer access to more than 80 homes and businesses in the area. The project which is completely funded by the RIRRC will take about nine months to make sewer tie-in access available to nearby homes and businesses.

The sewer line will be connected to the Narragansett Bay Commission’s wastewater treatment facilities and provide sewer access to all RIRRC facilities, including current and future Lakeside Commerce Center businesses and nearby homes. Johnston residents and business however are not obligated to tie-in to the new sewer system.

The construction will also result in about 12,000 feet of new sewer line. The new infrastructure will help the sewer system on Central Avenue with 820,000 gallons of wastewater per day.
