Global building materials supplier Cemex is intensifying its collaboration with cross-industry partners as it advances sustainability initiatives across the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region and accelerates the decarbonisation of its operations.
A central element of this strategy where Cemex expands sustainability partnerships in EMEA region is improving circularity and strengthening waste management systems. In Croatia, Cemex worked alongside the City of Kaลกtela Council to establish Reciklator, the first construction and demolition waste recycling facility in Split-Dalmatia County. The plant has an annual processing capacity of approximately 30,000 tonnes, or around 30,000tpa, positioning it as a significant addition to the regionโs waste infrastructure. The facility aligns with the EUโs 2030 objectives to reduce landfilling and expand circular solutions. It also provides local communities with more accessible and affordable options for managing construction and demolition waste materials.
Beyond waste management, Cemex expands sustainability partnerships in EMEA to lower emissions linked to construction activity. In early 2025, the company launched a partnership with Spanish property developer Metrovacesa to support three residential projects in Eastern Spain. For these developments, Cemex supplied more than 19,500m3 of Vertuaยฎ lower-carbon concrete. The company estimates that the use of Vertua helped avoid approximately 1709t of CO2 during construction, contributing to emissions reductions across the projects.
In the UAE, Cemex is working with RMB ReadyMix Concrete to further decarbonise built environments. Under this collaboration, Vertua cement has been fully integrated into RMBโs operational processes, embedding lower-carbon materials directly into day-to-day production and reinforcing a shared focus on sustainable development.
The company has also expanded its renewable energy sourcing. An agreement with Statkraft, one of Europeโs largest renewable energy providers, has enabled Cemex to transition a portion of its electricity consumption in Poland. Since January 2025, electricity generated from wind and photovoltaic farms operated by Statkraft has supplied Cemexโs cement and ready-mix plants in the country. This renewable supply covers approximately 30% of Cemexโs annual energy demand in Poland, supporting a measurable reduction in its carbon footprint.
