Facade Design Trends Influencing Urban Architecture

The rapid evolution of the building exterior is fundamentally reshaping the visual and functional identity of our cities, moving beyond static surfaces toward dynamic, responsive systems that interact with their surroundings. By embracing innovative materials and digital manufacturing processes, designers are creating high-performance envelopes that not only redefine building aesthetics but also contribute to the resilience and sustainability of the modern urban landscape.

Digital Planning Tools for Building Envelope Systems

The complexity of modern architectural skins requires a fundamental shift in how we conceive, design, and manage the outer boundaries of our structures. By leveraging advanced digital planning platforms and integrated modeling environments, the construction industry can achieve unprecedented levels of precision, ensuring that every component of the structural perimeter is optimized for performance, durability, and long-term sustainability throughout its entire operational lifecycle.

Fire Safety and Compliance in Building Openings

The protection of life and property in the built environment depends heavily on the integrity of apertures within fire-rated compartments, where every door and window must function as a reliable barrier against the spread of heat and smoke. By strictly adhering to modern fire regulations and implementing rigorously tested opening systems, architects and developers can ensure a high level of passive fire protection that safeguards occupants and facilitates a more effective response from emergency services.

Graham has secured an £18.3m contract to design and build a cancer centre at Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, UK, for North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust.

The cancer centre construction project was awarded to Graham through the Procure22 Framework.

Under the contract, Graham will build an 18-bay chemotherapy suite, a three-bed bay for day patients, two LINAC bunkers and a CT scanner suite.

The project also involves consultation and examination rooms, clinical planning and mould rooms, and extra space for support staff.

Graham healthcare director Keith Hayes said: “The project to create a new cancer centre at Cumberland Infirmary will play a vital role in improving facilities and services available to clinicians, patients and families across the region. It’s a crucial piece of work, and a positive step towards realising the NHS England Specialised Commissioners’ strategy for delivering sustainable models for cancer services in Cumbria.

“Graham enjoys a strong track record of delivery across the healthcare sector and we look forward to working with partners to help realise a project that will have a really positive impact for those who rely on the specialist care services offered at North Cumbria University Hospital.”

Services to be provided in the new facility will consist of radiotherapy, day-case chemotherapy, oncology late phase clinical trials and oncology outpatient clinics.

For the new facility, modular dry interlocking blocks will be used in the construction of the LINAC bunkers, which will offer protection from radiation outside of the bunkers.

The design of the building will aim to ease patient flow through the facility and prioritise patient health and comfort, along with the clinicians’ needs.

The project is currently in the design phase. Work on the project is slated to complete in January 2021.

High Performance Windows Meeting Global Energy Codes Today

The implementation of superior fenestration technology is no longer an optional upgrade but a fundamental necessity for architectural projects aiming to achieve regulatory compliance and long-term sustainability. By integrating advanced glazing and framing solutions, buildings can significantly reduce their operational energy demand while providing occupants with enhanced comfort and durability against a backdrop of increasingly stringent global construction standards.
