Enerpac has won a contract to build a 4,800t-capacity gantry crane to install precast elements for an offshore coastal highway at Reunion Island. It will be world’s largest offshore overhead gantry crane, according to Enerpac.

The crane has been ordered by a consortium of Bouygues Travaux Publics, Vinci Construction and Demathieu Bard Construction and will operate from a barge being used to construct the offshore highway.

The barge will be used to pick up concrete precast foundation elements  – gravity base, pile head and segments – at the harbour and position them on the seabed. The Enerpac crane will make at least 200 foundation block lifts.

The 5,400m coastal highway (Route du Littoral) will connect Saint Denis – the administrative capital of La RĂ©union – with La Possession. It replaces the existing coastal road, which is exposed to falling rocks and flooding from swells and tropical storms.

The crane is being built at the Enerpac Integrated Solutions manufacturing facility in Hengelo in the Netherlands.
