Canada-based infrastructure group Balfour Beatty has secured a £196m contract to carry out the second phase of BC Children’s & BC Women’s Redevelopment project in British Columbia, Canada.

Under the affinity partnerships consortium, Balfour Beatty will spend up to £8.9m on the project and Ledcor Developments will invest the remaining equity.

The BC Children’s and BC Women’s Redevelopment project is an initiative of the Provincial Health Services Authority that aims to be an integral part of British Columbia’s healthcare system. It will provide care for sick newborns, children and young people.

The three-phase, multi-year initiative aims to build the new Teck Acute Care Centre and to renovate existing facilities at BC Children’s Hospital (BC Children’s) and BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre (BC Women’s) in Vancouver.

Construction services will be carried out based on a joint venture between Balfour Beatty Construction and Ledcor Design Build.

Additionally, Balfour Beatty Communities and Black & McDonald will form a joint venture to deliver facilities management services for a period in excess of 30 years.

The second phase will see the construction of a neonatal intensive care unit, paediatric intensive care unit, high-risk birthing, medical imaging and procedures suites, emergency department, inpatient units, clinical education and research space, and parking spaces.

Balfour Beatty CEO Andrew McNaughton said this is a landmark project for Balfour Beatty; their first large healthcare project in Canada that establishes their local presence.

“We are delighted to be working with the Provincial Health Services Authority to deliver and manage this world-class acute care centre,” McNaughton said.

Construction on the project is expected to begin immediately.
