Morgan Sindall, a UK-based construction services provider, has won a £31 million ($50 million) contract to rehabilitate runways at Heathrow Airport in London, UK.

The reconstruction project involves repairing and replacing the existing wearing course on the northern and southern runways with Marshall Asphalt provided by an on-site coating plant. It also involves replacement of lights on both the runways.

The project will see restoration of all 13 entrances / exits on the northern runway. The project includes construction of three new rapid exit taxiways (RETs) on the southern runway.

According to Morgan Sindall, the work will be carried out at night during runway closures, with the runway handed back to the airport each morning to allow operations to resume. The rehabilitation project is expected to be completed in late 2014.

The restoration project was awarded under a competitive tendering process. Morgan Sindall has worked extensively at Heathrow airport, both on the airfield and terminal works, for over 20 years.
