Modern Masonry Systems Supporting Structural and Architectural Flexibility

Modern masonry systems have evolved significantly to balance structural performance with architectural freedom. Contemporary approaches integrate engineered materials, advanced installation techniques, and flexible connection systems that allow masonry to serve both load-bearing and aesthetic functions. These innovations enable architects and builders to create striking commercial and institutional designs while maintaining the durability, fire resistance, and thermal properties that make masonry a reliable choice for contemporary construction.

Innovations in Masonry Construction for Resilient Building Design

Innovations in masonry construction techniques and material science have fundamentally enhanced building resilience across diverse environmental and structural contexts. Contemporary masonry systems incorporate advanced reinforcement methods, specialized material formulations, and sophisticated design approaches that improve resistance to seismic activity, environmental stresses, and long-term wear. These innovations position masonry as a reliable, sustainable solution for resilient building design that protects occupants and extends infrastructure service life.

Designed by IBI Group, the refurbished Barnsley Market, located in South Yorkshire, has opened its doors to the public, marking a major milestone of the £150m ‘The Glass Works’ retail and leisure scheme being delivered by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and its development manager, Queensberry.

This award-winning masterplan, which will see the significant redevelopment of Barnsley town centre, was developed by IBI Group and is now being implemented in two phases, with an overall expected completion of November 2020.

The new Barnsley Market – which received its original Royal Charter in 1249 and has been a historic mainstay in the community for centuries – comprises a series of interlinked market halls across two floors. The space is organised around a row of double-height atrium spaces that introduce natural light to the deep plan and provide places of orientation and meeting. Extensive consultation with market traders ensured stalls are designed to serve individual business needs, while retaining a coherent market brand image throughout.

The first floor ‘Market Kitchen’ food court contains 10 independent food operators and is open into the evening, contributing to a more sustainable night-time economy. It is accessible from within the market halls and also directly from the street, opening onto a first floor terrace overlooking the new Market Square.

“In a challenging retail environment, we set out to re-make Barnsley as a 21st Century market town. We are proud of the role we have played in securing the relevancy of the Market for future generations and its place in a vibrant, diverse and sustainable town centre,” said Seamus Lennon, IBI Group Studio Director and Project Lead.

The key tenets of IBI Group’s award-winning masterplan include: connectivity, incorporating the creation of new streets and their relationship with existing streets; the retention and creative reuse of existing buildings; and the creation of a high-quality public realm.

Featuring new retail and leisure facilities, family-friendly restaurants, a multiplex cinema, bowling lanes, a public library, significant public realm improvements including a new landmark public square, as well as the refurbished Market, the town of Barnsley will be entirely reimagined when the town centre redevelopment is complete in 2020.

IBI Group are providing masterplanning, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, planning consultancy and BIM services on the project, leading a large, multi-disciplinary team.
