Tenders have been invited for the construction of a major new healthcare project in Abu Dhabi, it was announced on Wednesday.

The Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, also known as Seha, said in a statement that it has invited tenders for the development of new Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC).

Seha added that the new SKMC project will be the largest hospital in the UAE once completed. Envisioned as an integrated medical city, Seha’s SKMC will be spread on an area of over 300,000 sq m.

It will include three distinct hospitals – a general hospital, a level 1 trauma centre and a tertiary women’s and paediatric hospital with a capacity of 826 beds.

The hospital will feature extensive use of natural light to reduce power needs, a solar panel system with high-efficiency concentrating photovoltaic cells for power, alongside traditional practices such as condensate recovery system supplying natural irrigation for the hospital’s garden areas.

The project is being implemented by Seha in line with the objectives of the Abu Dhabi Government that aims at providing integrated health services for the UAE nationals and residents.

Late last year, Abu Dhabi published new guidelines for providers of healthcare services in the emirate.

A new set of policy manuals was released by the Health Authority – Abu Dhabi (HAAD), the healthcare regulator, in a bid to improve standards.

The new guidelines define the roles and responsibilities of the regulator, providers, and insurance companies and will be phased in over a 12-month period.
