Trimble has expanded the construction risk intelligence capabilities of Document Crunch to include construction drawings, enabling contractors to review drawings alongside contracts, specifications and other project documents. The new capabilities use CrunchAI technology to help construction teams identify scope gaps, conflicting requirements and potential project risks during preconstruction.

The enhancement allows project teams to search and query across complete document sets simultaneously, providing a more comprehensive view of project requirements before construction begins. By identifying discrepancies earlier, contractors can clarify responsibilities, assess costs and resolve issues before they lead to rework, unexpected expenses or disputes.

Document Crunch, a Trimble company, developed the capabilities to address the challenges of reviewing large volumes of construction documentation, where important requirements can be distributed across hundreds of drawing sheets and technical specifications.

AI Technology Analyses Drawings and Project Documents

Construction projects typically involve extensive documentation, including drawings, contracts, specifications and supporting records. Differences between these documents can create uncertainty around project scope, responsibilities and required work.

CrunchAI extracts and indexes text from construction drawing sets, including notes, allowances and language defining the scope of work. Through a chat-based interface, users can ask questions across drawings, contracts and specifications together to investigate requirements and identify potential inconsistencies.

The system also provides source-linked citations so users can verify answers against the original project documents. Identified findings can then be incorporated into standardised preconstruction reviews and workflows.

According to Document Crunch, general-purpose artificial intelligence models can struggle with large, text-heavy drawing sheets and may lack the project-specific context needed to connect requirements across different documents. The expanded capabilities are designed specifically for construction workflows, combining proprietary pre-processing and post-processing with agentic optimisation to produce relevant responses.

The shared project environment also allows teams to collaborate on identified issues, track their progress and maintain visibility into how risks are being addressed. Follow-up tasks can be assigned through repeatable workflows, helping organisations apply consistent review practices across projects.

Construction Drawing Reviews Target Scope Gaps

The expanded capabilities are intended to strengthen several stages of preconstruction review, particularly when contractors are evaluating bid packages and checking whether drawings and specifications align.

The system can help teams verify drawing-sheet indexes, identify missing sheets or specification sections, and flag discrepancies between disciplines. These checks can reveal gaps before contractors finalise bids or commit to project delivery.

Reviewing drawings alongside contracts and specifications can also help identify conflicting requirements and unclear responsibilities. Resolving these issues before contract award may reduce the likelihood that overlooked work becomes a source of additional costs or construction delays.

The technology is designed to support standardised review processes by allowing companies to apply the same checks across different drawing sets and related project documents. This can help teams maintain consistency even when projects involve large documentation packages and multiple disciplines.

Josh Levy, co-founder of Document Crunch and vice president of risk and compliance solutions at Trimble, said, “Construction teams work across hundreds of drawing sheets, specifications, contracts and other project documents, and significant risks emerge when information across these documents doesn’t align. Accelerating this review process with AI provides preconstruction teams a comprehensive view of project requirements, allowing them to identify conflicts and scope gaps while there is still time to clarify, price or resolve them before they become rework, unplanned cost or disputes.”

Contractor Example Highlights Practical Application

Document Crunch cited an example from a renovation project involving plumbing work and additional activities that were not clearly identified in the drawings. The case illustrates how reviewing related project requirements together can help uncover work that might otherwise be missed during early planning.

Kristen Ortiz, vice president of project controls at Hill & Wilkinson, said, “On a recent renovation project, we had to redo some plumbing, but the drawings didn’t show that we would also need to cut concrete and backfill. Document Crunch caught those additional requirements, helping our team identify work that might otherwise have been overlooked.”

The example highlights the potential value of connecting drawing information with broader project documentation. Missing or unclear scope details can affect estimating, coordination and construction planning if they are not identified before work begins.

Digital Risk Management Advances in Preconstruction

The expansion reflects the growing use of specialised AI tools to support document-intensive construction workflows. Rather than reviewing drawings in isolation, contractors can use the technology to assess how requirements relate across different project records.

The platform’s shared environment is intended to support collaboration, issue tracking and follow-up, while source-linked citations allow teams to check the basis for identified findings. These functions are designed to help construction professionals incorporate document analysis into established preconstruction processes.

By bringing drawings into its construction risk intelligence capabilities, Document Crunch aims to help contractors identify potential problems earlier and apply more consistent checks before projects move into execution. The practical value will depend on how teams verify findings, address identified risks and integrate the technology into their existing workflows.
