UK-based David Chipperfield Architects has been chosen to prepare the masterplan for redevelopment of UK’s Geffrye museum.

The firm won an open competition beating four other competitors to secure the project. Work will involve expansion of the existing museum towards Cremer Street as well as reorganisation of the functions of the facility. There will be a new building with temporary exhibition area, collection storage space, a new library and archive along with a garden circulation link.

Further, a present public building will get a facelift and will also be expanded. In addition, the main entrance of the building will be relocated. The project will create an additional area of about 2,500 square metres immediately adjacent to the present buildings and in front of Cremer Street and Geffrye Street. The project will be funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and is due for completion by 2014.
