Once the “Shams 1” concentrated solar plant being developed by Masdar in Abu Dhabi is fully on stream the United Arab Emirates will be responsible for an estimated 68% of the Gulf Cooperation Council’s renewable energy capacity. This is a positive step towards reaching Abu Dhabi’s target of generating 7% of its electricity from renewable sources.

Following Abu Dhabi’s lead in setting a renewable energy goal, other governments in the region have developed their own clean energy plans for the next decade or two. Saudi Arabia, for example, hopes to generate 41 gigawatts of electricity from solar power, and both Kuwait and Dubai plan to obtain 5% of their power needs from renewable sources by 2030. These figures show increasing determination to produce sustainable energy locally and indicate the promising investment potential of the renewables sector across MENA. Our MENA renewable energy map illustrates the different projects in the region to be completed within the next decade.

Since 2008, the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) has been inspiring global collaboration to find and implement sustainable technologies. This spirit of collaboration will further intensify at the sixth WFES in 2013, as the ‘Sustainable Energy for All’ campaign launched by UN General Secretary Ban Ki-Moon at WFES 2012 gathers pace.

Next January, the World Future Energy Summit will once again bring together investors, project developers and innovators to enable firm progress on developing the infrastructure needed to produce more power for urban and rural areas from renewable sources and lessen the environmental impact of economic growth. The Project and Finance Village at WFES 2013 will be a venue dedicated to this task, showcasing renewable energy projects from around the Middle East, Africa and the world.

Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, starting January 13, will further increase the momentum behind next year’s summit, attracting as many as 30,000 decision makers in government, industry, enterprise and investment. More so than ever before, WFES will match words with action – helping to ensure that more projects like Shams 1 take root in the Middle East and elsewhere.

Yours sincerely,

Naji Haddad
