The American Institute of Architects and toy manufacturers Mattel have announced a playful design competition for a Dream House for I Can Be…Architect Barbie. Available from American toy stores from August this year, Architect Barbie comes accessorised with a small pink house, hard hat and tube of design ideas.

Now an opportunity has arisen for AIA members to create a home for the doll, and while the competition may sound rather whimsical, the brief is solid. Barbie’s Dream House must include sustainable design principles, room for an office, open living and dining areas, and plenty of room for her five pets – including her giraffe.

The deadline for submissions is 27th June and five finalists will be announced on 12th July. The public will have an opportunity to select their favourite entry from 12th July until 1st August, with the AIA announcing the winning concept on 2nd August.
