Manchester-based Harbur Construction has started work on a £13m student accommodation development in Preston.

The new building will provide rooms for 226 students in 44 five-bedroom flats. An additional 20 studio apartments will be built in a separate annexe to provide quieter living quarters for mature students.

The en-suite flats will offer communal living with shared kitchen and dining facilities. The development will also have a cinema, games room, laundry room and study rooms.

The Jubilee Court scheme is being built on Fylde Road at the former site of the Jubilee Trading Estate, near the campus of the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

Harbur Construction managing director Richard Hutchinson said: “The Fylde Road development is Harbur’s first scheme in the student accommodation sector, but we already have an array of other student development opportunities in the pipeline, so it’s a time of real expansion and growth for Harbur Construction.”

He said of the Preston project: “The development is located close to the main university campus and is being built using high quality materials so the properties will be robust enough for student living.”

Harbur Construction is building the scheme on behalf of private housing developer Alpha Homes. It is expected to be completed in July 2016.
