With Qatar primed to invest $5bn in the stadia required to host the 2022 World Cup, and with numerous other large projects planned and underway in the region, interest in the sports infrastructure sector is expected to soar in the coming 12-18 months.

On 16-17 April MEED shall host the first Stadium Build Middle East conference. Over 150 project owners, developers, contractors, architects, engineers and specialist consultants will convene at the Renaissance City Center Hotel in Doha to hear about the requirements and current progress of the development of Qatar’s 2022 stadia, and discuss challenges and best practice associated with the design, construction and development of large sports stadia.

Highlights of the event include an address from the Qatar Olympic Committee and three stadium project case study presentations. Projects that will be showcased at the conference include two of Qatar’s proposed 2022 venues – the 86,000 capacity Lusail Iconic Stadium and the 45,300 capacity Sports City Stadium in Al Khor. Also featured will be an exclusive look at the Basra Sports City complex in Iraq, an ongoing project estimated at $500m. The presentation will include insight from both the local contractor on the project – Anwar Soura General Contracting Company – and the venue designers – 360 Architects.

Supporting speakers at the event include several leading international architecture and engineering firms, including Albert Speer & Partners, Foster & Partners, AEDAS, and the American architecture firm 360 Architects. Other contributors at the conference include Arup, KPMG, Qatar University, AECOM, and technology specialist Rehau. The conference is sponsored by Al Jaber Engineering and Sika.
