Tenders invited for $500M road upgrade

TENDERS are being called to construct stage one of Western Sydney’s $500 million Bringelly Road upgrade.

Stage one will upgrade 5.7km of the 10km road, with construction between Camden Valley Way at Leppington and King Street at Rossmore expected to start by the end of the year.

“This is an important milestone in the delivery of our joint $3.5 billion Western Sydney infrastructure plan that will boost the region’s productive capacity and capitalise on the economic gains from developing an airport at Badgerys Creek,” Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Jamie Briggs said.

“The Australian and New South Wales governments have committed $500 million to upgrade Bringelly Road to slash travel times in the southwest growth centre and improve access for the future Western Sydney Airport.”

The upgrade will be carried out in two stages and provide two lanes in each direction, with three lanes to be installed each way between Upper Canal and Eastwood roads.

“We’re also future proofing the project, by ensuring capacity along the whole 10km to widen it to three lanes each way in future if required,” NSW Minister for Roads and Freight Duncan Gay said.

Stage one construction is expected to be completed in 2017.

Contractors have until August 13 to submit their tenders for the project.

Stage two detailed design for the 4.3km from King Street to The Northern Road at Bringelly is underway, with construction works anticipated for completion in 2018.

The $500 million Bringelly Road upgrade is part of the $3.5 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan, which also comprises:

  • The Northern Road upgrade to a minimum of four lanes from Narellan to M4 Motorway (31km, $1.6 billion);

  • upgrade of the Elizabeth Drive corridor with a new four lane motorway between the M7 Motorway and The Northern Road (14km, $1.25 billion);

  • improvements to interchanges connecting The Northern Road and the new motorway with arterial roads; and

  • local road upgrades ($200 million).

“Our joint commitment to build world class infrastructure throughout Western Sydney will create 4000 jobs and boost the local economy, making Western Sydney an even better place to live and do business,” Briggs said.

Design tenders for the 11km stage two of The Northern Road from Peter Brock Drive to Mersey Road are expected to be invited in the coming months.
