Balfour Beatty Construction completes first of four activity center facilities for Tustin Unified School District

Balfour Beatty Construction and the Tustin Unified School District celebrated the completion of a new activity center facility at Columbus Tustin Middle School. A special dedication ceremony was held December 14.

The $6.5 million facility at Columbus Tustin Middle School is the first of four activity centers that will also be built in the Tustin Unified School District at A.G. Currie, Hewes, and C.E. Utt Middle Schools. The total construction cost for the entire project (all four activity centers) is $25 million.

Publicetractable bleachers, storage space, restrooms, performance area, lighting and two adjoining classrooms.   The projects have been designed to provide optimal community access and close proximity to existing locker room facilities, and are situated in an area that calls for minimal disruption to heavily used recreational areas on campus.

The estimated date of completion for all activity centers is February 2013.

This project is one of the company’s first completely paperless projects. As a paperless project, we will save the District an estimated $50,000 and will reduce our use of paper by over 11,000 pounds.

“Our company is very committed to making better use of the planet’s finite resources and reducing costs for our clients,” said John Squillace, Balfour Beatty Construction project executive the overseeing the job. “This project is just one example of how we are leading the industry in these areas and lessening the impact on the build environment.”

The Architect of Record is NTD Architecture, and the project is being funded through the Measure L campus modernization program passed by Orange County voters in Tustin Unified School District in 2008.

Balfour Beatty Construction’s project team on the Columbus Tustin Middle School Activity Center includes John Squillace, project executive; Al Calvet, project manager; Jim Mullanix, superintendent; Marshall Sharp, project engineer; and Ann Christy, project accountant.
