London Bridge Strikes Gold In Considerate Constructors Awards

Costain’s London Bridge Redevelopment has won a Considerate Constructors Gold award for achieving the very highest levels of considerate construction.

The major six-year redevelopment project impressed the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) judges with details such as the empowerment of perimeter security guards to report any lapses in external presentation. “This approach was replicated throughout all areas of considerate construction, with operatives going well beyond expected standards,” said the judges.

They also praised as “outstanding” the site’s community support programme, which has included practical and financial help for two community garden projects, bricklaying training for volunteers, and money collected from incident reporting for local good causes. Site staff also gave presentations to 600 pupils and university students.

Added the citation: “The constant seeking of new initiatives also delivered exceptional standards in securing everyone’s safety and helped create a site clearly committed to delivering the very best in considerate construction”.

Graham Dean, Community and Security Manager, collected the award at a ceremony at the Mermaid Theatre in London on 20 April. He said: “In the past three years the site has gone from bronze to silver and now gold and everyone is very pleased.

“A lot of our success is down to a very strong team ethos. Everyone cares about how the site looks, how we impact on the environment and how the local community perceives us. We are always on the look out for anything that might detract from the site.”

The London Bridge Redevelopment project includes the replacement of the entire roof and the construction of a new concourse at street level, with new entrances. It is part of a programme of works for Network Rail that will increase the frequency of trains running through London on the busy Thameslink route. Scheduled for completion in 2018, the project will see through-station passenger capacity rise to 90 million people a year from the current 55 million.

The CCS is the national initiative set up by the construction industry to improve its image. Construction sites and companies that register with the scheme are monitored against a Code of Considerate Practice, designed to encourage best practice beyond statutory requirements.
