Costain wins two refinery contracts in UK

Costain Group PLC, a UK-based provider of engineering solutions, has secured two contracts from Total S.A., a French multinational oil and gas company, to provide engineering and procurement services for Total’s Lindsey Oil Refinery at Immingham on the Humber Estuary in Lincolnshire, UK.

The projects are being undertaken to improve the environmental performance of the refinery. The scope of the first project involves installation of a flare gas recovery compressor on the refinery flare system.

The new system will allow recovery of gas and use it rather than burning it to atmosphere, which will reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and sulphur oxides. Furthermore, it will also trim-down the dependence on the import of natural gas as a fuel. The new installation is scheduled to come online in late 2014. The project will also allow further flare gas recovery systems to be accommodated in the future.

The second project involves installation of a Freon replacement package on one of the refinery’s cryogenic units. The project will enable the refinery to be congruent with the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, which comes into effect at the end of 2014.

The new refrigeration package will use propane as a refrigerant rather than Freon. The new refrigeration package will be designed so that it can be manufactured off site in a modular format and installed on-site, with minimal disruption to production on site. The new installation is planned to come online following the shutdown scheduled for September 2014.

The combined contracts will be executed by Costain’s Teeside team in association with its Manchester office.
